Our graduating seniors wrote thank-you notes, reflecting on their time at UIC and the friends, family, and instructors who helped them along the way. We’re sharing these notes all week for A Week of Gratitude.
Gaddys Del Pilak Ybarra
“She was up against odds, she was brought down by many, she was told she would never make it, and she was ready to give up. She had dreamt that one day she would be looking into the mirror to see herself in a cap and gown holding her diplomas, whispering to her self, ‘You’re almost there, continue fighting, and conquer this battle.’ For this battle would be one of the many she would have to face. She finally won that battle, a battle that she had been fighting up against for 5 and a half years. A battle she thought she would never win. She is however grateful for this battle because it helped her bloom and shape her. She grew into a better version of herself.”
I want to thank Professor Garcia and Professor James for allocating all the resources we needed to succeed in this class. With the help of Buddy [Scarborough] and Alison [Moss], they formed a phenomenal group that went above and beyond their call of duty. They were there for us at every step of our journey. You were a life guide, not just a professor. To the friends I made, thank you for making me laugh, educating me, and being the people I can count on. For anybody else reading this, I wish you all the best, and don’t be strangers – we can all use one another for help (networking).
I want to give a huge thank you to my friends, Nina Lemus, Eric Vumana, and Kristina Decheva, for being an amazing group to work with. I want to thank Buddy [Scarborough], as well, for spending his time with us to succeed with our capstone project. Without Buddy we might not have been as successful with the project as we were. I also wanted to give a huge thank you to Kevin James for being inspirational – his stories have helped me continue with my education.
There is not one sociology professor that I can say has not been impactful to my learning. Sociology has been a field worth learning all because of the wonderful teachers who have taught me and my classmates, as well. And finally a thank you to my family who has supported my choice in my sociological journey.
